amy: Join a book club to read a variety of authors and genres, and to encourage reading. Book club is a great support group with interesting and knowledgeable people -- good friends. holly: I think that the beauty of a book club is that it forces you to read books that you would not otherwise read. janet: Book club is a great way to stumble on new authors and genres, as well as little-known facts about your friends! No, really, we have found that each of us has interesting and unusual insights about one character or another, or their situations, just because we have lived such different experiences. I like that ... the rediscovery of our diversity that takes place each month. But we also find similarities where we would have guessed none existed. So, book club is an interesting and fun way to discover new authors and each other, and it's a great motivator to read something every month! (that is, I TRY to read our selection every month. My intentions are sound, if not my results!) I am often amazed at who enjoys what books. I frequently guess wrong on that score, but I think that just emphasizes how personal our reading experiences really are. How great that we come together and share them! sarah: If you love to read, it's nice to be with others who share your passion. Also, it gets me reading things I wouldn't have thought of, helping me find new authors I like, and gives me something productive to do with a book I didn't like, so I feel my time wasn't wasted. suzie: The great thing about belonging to a book group, besides a legitimate excuse to get out of the house once a month, is the obligation ... er, I mean opportunity ... to read books I might not otherwise. Without a book group (and the guilt that goes along with it) I doubt I would venture much outside the genres I most enjoy. And sometimes a book comes along that you just HAVE to talk about (like Bastard Out of Carolina) and if you belong to a book group, you can volunteer to host the next meeting and the other members are your literary mercy for the month. trudy: Not being in a book club right now makes me really miss the ones I've been in. They are great because you get to share different ideas/opinions about the same subject. You might gain another insight that you would have missed otherwise. Clubs motivate you to read different books than ones you would choose!! And once in a while you find a gem that way. To be in the company of equally-minded people -- ie. willing to read and discuss (not necessarily being of the same opinion) -- going on to other topics, and having a glass of wine is top entertainment! wendy: Join a book club for the chance to get to know the members better -- gabbing with your friends!
